Play Time
Here is an experiment for your child to try. Place an ice cube in a bowl of water and ask him to pick up the ice cube with a length of string.
It will not be possible. Then put salt
on top of the ice cube and lay the string on top. Count slowly to 10. The string and ice will stick together!
Hold snow in a bare hand and in a hand wearing a mitten; which melts fastest?
An older child might like to bring a bucket of snow indoors, note where the snow comes to and check it as it melts, then measure the amount of water that is left.
Freeze a large block of ice and take it outside. Ask children to spoon salt on it in several places, and then drop food colouring in diff erent colours on each place they put salt. Watch the colours work their way down.
