We are a nation of walkers, whether it be a stroll along the river or the challenge of the Munroes; our feet work hard for us. Is it any wonder then, that we sometimes get heel pain?

The pain often starts gradually around the bottom of the heel, fi rst off as a little niggle which can gradually worsen over time until we fi nd ourselves limping.

The pain is usually worse fi rst thing in the morning, or when you fi rst take a step after a period of inactivity. Walking usually improves the pain, but it often gets worse again after walking or standing for a long time.

One of the most common causes of this pain is excessive stresses through a structure in your foot called the plantar fascia.

It is a

strong band of tissue that is very important in maintaining the arch of the foot, and can be damaged suddenly or over the course of many years.

It is important to get the correct treatment for your heel pain and this can be done by attending a podiatrist, who will discuss your symptoms before performing a thorough examination of your foot and ankle.

Once

diagnosed a treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs, and may involve rest, specifi c stretches and footwear advice. For the more troublesome cases in shoe supports (orthoses) may need to be used. By working together though, you will be back on your feet in no time!
