Due to the growth of Ultimate in the Maritimes, the competition and the predictable storm that typically accompanies Fruit Bowl, most teams that are accepted are from within a six-hour drive. However, each year players fly in to town to join teams from recent pasts to experience the best indoor Ultimate has to offer in the Maritimes...and to enjoy a great party. The tournament has raised over $10 000 for local charities through original items donated by participating teams for the tournament silent and live auction.

The 2014 three-day tournament got off to a great start on Friday night with the fourth-ranked Magnet X of Moncton edging the ninth-ranked local development team SOS (Spawn Of Spawn). Tied 11-11 at the end of regulation time, the game went to Universe point where Magnet X pulled off the hard-fought victory.

In pool A, Emeritus, an all-star team from across Canada, made quick work of Mag-Yetti (Moncton/ Saint John team) but then fell to Ninjabread. Ninjabread completed pool play with a decisive

victory over Mag-Yetti.

In pool B, SPAWN rolled over DKUT of Halifax 13-4 but needed extra time to complete the comeback against Maine-based Blackfly. Down 11-8, the local team dug deep to win 12-11. Blackfly rebounded to beat DKUT 13-6 to finish second in pool B. The host club, SPAWN rallied to beat defending champion Ninjabread of Halifax 15-11 in Sunday’s final at the Nashwaaksis Field House.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Ninja were up 8-6 and seemed to have everything in control. During the halftime break, SPAWN decided to switch from a zone defense to person on person D, relying on their roster depth to run the Ninjas ragged. SPAWN outscored the Halifax team 9-3 in the second half to take the title and return the trophy back home. The tournament raised more than $400 for this year’s charity, the Brendon Oreto Foundation.
