AWARDS Victoria Nomads
The first Ultimate team in B.C., the Flying Islanders, was founded in Victoria in 1982, but it took the Nomads to take that tradition and rise to the top. After a hiatus for Ultimate at the University of Victoria, David Martin founded the UV Rays in 1989, and they morphed into the community-based Nomads in 1992.
The Nomads competed in the Open Division at the Canadian Ultimate Championships a number of times through the 1990s, finishing as high as fourth in 1994 in Winnipeg, but didn’t truly come into their own until 2001 in Edmonton, when they accomplished a rare feat at a national championship: winning both gold and the spirit of the game award. They went on to win the Open Division in 2004 in Vancouver, in 2005 in Winnipeg, and in 2008
in Calgary. As the core of the team aged, they switched to the Masters Division, which they won in 2011 in Ottawa and 2012 at home in Victoria.
They also were very active in regional tournaments throughout this period; with the crown jewel being a first place in the Open Division in 1995 at the annual Solstice tournament in Eugene, Oregon, which draws the best teams from up and down the west coast of North America. They also represented Canada in the Open Division in the WFDF World Championships in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin, and in 1997 in Vancouver. Since switching to Masters, they won gold for Canada in the World Ultimate and Guts Championships in 2013 in Sakai, Japan.
