Team Canada began its search for a gold medal on March 9th, 2014 in Kingston ON. 41 open players and 21 women’s players from Ontario and Quebec gathered at the brand new 1000 Island Sportsplex in Kingston, Ontario, to prove they deserved to represent Canada. Players were pushed to their limits, both physically and mentally, being taken through rigorous fitness testing before drills and scrimmaging 7 on 7. Before tryouts began, the coaches set high standards, looking for athletic and skilled players with a strong work ethic.
With two more tryouts to go, the eastern session proved that choosing the team would be an extremely difficult task. The following weekend, Team Canada hopefuls in Winnipeg woke up early to start tryouts at 6:00am. The Winnipeg players were professional, motivated and eager to perform. It was amazing to see the number of skilled players that came from the MOFO program. By 11:00am the coaches were on a flight to rainy Vancouver. Almost 100mm of rain fell on Saturday night. With tryouts the following day, coaches and players prepared for the worst. Suprisingly, the following morning brought sun and despite the puddles, March 16th proved to be a beautiful day. Vancouver had the largest number of applicants, 40 open and 31 women’s players pushed their limits showing that BC juniors dominate at CUC for a reason.
With a record number of applicants, we had the very difficult task of selecting Team Canada.
The open team is made up of 24 players whose athleticism and skill are only outdone by their intensity. With 16 players all competing in the 2013 CUC Junior Open finals in addition to 2 pros out of Quebec, this team brings a wealth of experience and maturity that will serve them well as they start down the road towards Italy. This team is well placed to represent
