REGIONAL INTEREST
what is now one of the most robust juniors programs on the planet. Fast-forward to 2014. I’ve got teenagers of my own. I live in Calgary. I know how awesome Ultimate is and what an amazing opportunity the sport offers to young people.

in Kelowna went to locals, Kamlona, a combination of Kelowna and Kamloops open players. On the women’s side, first place went to the only team to have made it out to all three tournaments in the series, Where’s My Phyr from Vancouver. The final was a tight game again Nelson Home Girls. Both teams were able to take advantage of Kelowna’s unique indoor field set up, but in the end, the Vancouver ladies had it. K-Bad, a local Kelowna girls team, also played hard and finished third.

Junior Showdown Written by: Tim Friesen
23 years ago I was asked to coach a ragtag bunch of kids from a Vancouver high school that was entering one of the very first tournaments for juniors in the lower mainland. I met some great kids and saw a unique opportunity to bring kids from different interests and sport backgrounds together. We had skaters and volleyball players, band kids and science geeks and the best player on the school basketball team. I met guys named Marc Seraglia and Mike Grant at the event ... you may have heard of them.
The kids had a blast and that event was a first-step into
We live on the east side of some big rocks and a long way from the rich juniors program in BC. The next closest hotbed of junior activity is in Winnipeg - an equal distance away across the nation’s heartland. Huge props need to go out to MODS and especially to Dean Wright for creating the amazing and vibrant juniors scene in Manitoba.
Where is all this going? Well we wanted to fill the gap between the west coast and Manitoba. A wise man once said tournaments are the reason he started playing Ultimate and why kids get involved. That man is Danny Saunders, our UC Director.
So, in Calgary, we created ShowDown. It’s the first regional tournament that attempts to fill the gap. We’ve got junior clubs started in Calgary and Edmonton and have good friends from Kelowna, Kamloops and Vernon plus places like Kaslo and Nelson that have kids playing too. We hosted a few squads from Winnipeg in our inaugural event last year and we’re hoping to see several MB squads again this year.
Saskatchewan has school clubs in Regina and a program underway in Saskatoon.
You’re all welcome and encouraged to mosey on over to Calgary on the May Long weekend, May 17-18. Join us on the high alpine plain between a rock and a flat place. Come show us rodeo clowns how to play!
