The Square Grouper Dog Wash for Heroes is the one day of the year dogs are welcomed at the Square Grouper Tiki Bar. This tropical oasis overlooks the intracoastal water- way and the Jupiter lighthouse, and was the backdrop for Alan Jackson’s music video for his hit single, It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere. Happy canines frolicked in the waves, fetched balls and
swam at Square Grouper beach. Afterwards, they headed over for a good scrubbing and relaxing towel off, by area volunteers. The finishing touch was a bandana pro- vided by Joyce Crum. Funds raised support US military canines and their handlers serving overseas, a campaign launched by Operation Care For Heroes™ to support the US War Dogs Association. Proceeds from the event were earmarked for special items needed and to pro- vide comfort in extreme conditions, including K9 boots, Doggles (goggles), health and grooming sup- plies and toys for post- duty relief.
Operation Care For
Military working dogs Tess and Aryck with their owner/handler Al Dobbs. Special guest was Tess, a retired military working dog (MWD) who has two tours of duty in Iraq to her credit. This ten-year-old German Shepherd dog and her handler, Al Dobbs hail from Satellite Beach. They shared stories of Tess' work as a search and rescue (SAR) cadaver dog amid harsh conditions in the Middle East. Tess located the remains of missing US soldiers as well as mass graves. Tess and her son, Aryck continue to work in the southeastern United States as a search and rescue team. Rover reporting and photography by Tina K. VaLant.

Heroes™ is a Jupiter- Tequesta based grassroots volunteer group dedicated to send- ing care packages to US troops serving overseas in war zones. Since 2008, they have shipped 1,375 boxes of donated items to our soldiers far from home. Each box costs nearly $15 to ship, and donations collected at OCFH events fund shipping costs.
