The sanctuary is part of a 127-acre estate in Odessa that belongs to Helen A. Rosburg, (left) an award- winning author and ani- mal advocate. Home to a menagerie of rescued species, from chickens and rabbits, to birds, pigs and horses, it’s not unusual to find Helen walking the grounds with special treats for each of her per- manent guests. With all of the

news about abandoned dogs in overcrowded

shelters, John and his staff believe they are making inroads to a social change. “We are fortunate that Helen believes in what we’re doing, and how we are accomplishing it,” he noted.

Casie Hatfield, an intern visiting from Penn State is shown here with Roy, a Rottwieller. Katie White, who has been with the sanctuary for three years is shown with Odie, a Pit mix.

Everyone working at On the Wings of Angels, is

naturally optimistic that a better world exists for dis- carded dogs. “It’s easier to make a change when peo- ple can see a solution to a problem. We’re not just harping on the problem, we’re providing a real solu- tion through education and hands-on experience.” While it may not be a sea change, a change is going to come, no matter how overwhelming the task may seem. “You always train the dog that’s in front of you,” said John.
