For the Calmer, Gentler Dog Whisperer, Giving Up Is Not An Option. –by Heather Schulman
Cesar Millan revealed his secrets to a happier, healthier relationship between humans and their canine companions at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts on June 15th. He opened his show by sharing something that he does not keep a secret: he was a kid from Mexico who illegally crossed the border. He joked about his immigra- tion status and warmed up the audience of dog lovers by sharing how crossing the border is simi- lar to an intense agility course. He was surprised by the interaction between
human and dog when he arrived in the United States. “Dogs living in Mexico are not on leashes and follow their owner; they know their limits at home and throughout the community,” Cesar told the audience. The way humans and dogs interact- ed in Mexico when he was growing up there, was not how people interacted with their dogs in the United States. He knew instantly that he was going to make a difference by being a dog train- er. He first started his journey by walking unruly dogs in bad neighborhoods and hasn’t looked back.
To me, the beauty of his performance in
Tampa was that just three days before, Cesar shared some shocking secrets about his life on NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams. What people did not know about Cesar Millan was that his life started to fall apart three years ago. It all began when his beloved pit bull Daddy passed away from cancer. Cesar’s whole world had been Daddy and his family. Then Illsion, his wife of 16 years, called asking him for a divorce, and soon his relationship with his two sons started to crumble. Cesar also learned that he owned very little of his business. And so, this huge TV personality who made
the ‘Dog Whisperer’ a huge success with more than 11 million people tuning in weekly, decided to attempt suicide. He choose to take his life by mixing several bottles of pills. Luckily, his chil- dren found him and were able to save his life. While recovering in a hospital, he found that most of the patients and hospital staff were either fans or knew of his work and expressed their admi- ration and respect for him and his accomplishments. Cesar began to have a sense of purpose again and was able to make a turnaround in his life. He now has a stronger sense of direction

with his business and has mended his issues with his children. The man who has been scrutinized by the media and his
peers for being “too aggressive” with animals, has learned a few things over the years. He now has a new show with a new approach called the ‘Leader of the Pack’. The program show- cases a gentler, wiser Cesar Millan. The focus of the show is Cesar’s work with rescuing abandoned and neglected dogs, as he transforms them into adoptable pets. He uses his proven train- ing techniques of exercise, discipline and affection to ultimately find them their forever homes.
