Running Down A Dream.
On June 22 outside Melbourne Greyhound Park in Brevard County, 20 Greyhound advocates stood up for Greyhounds for several hours in the glaring heat. Gathering with signs and leaflets to speak out against dog racing in Florida, the peaceful protest was a team effort. Organized by Florida GREY 2K USA board member Charmaine Settle and her husband Bill, the con- sensus among the group was, "If the dogs are forced to run in this weather, the least that we can do is let our voices be heard for them," wrote Christine Dorchak in an email to us. Ms. Dorchak is president and general counsel for GREY 2K USA which was founded in 2001. Currently, Florida is one of seven states that still operates a total of 22 dog tracks. Another Florida protest took place in Miami at Flagler
Greyhound Track on June 1, where a similar number of advo- cates gathered. Since GREY 2K USA formed in 2001, the dog racing
industry has been cut in half. Altogether, 26 tracks have ended dog racing and most have closed entirely, including three in Florida (Seminole Greyhound Park, Jacksonville Kennel Club, Tampa Greyhound Park). However, Florida is still one of only seven states left where pari-mutuel dog racing remains legal and operational. To find out more information state-by-state, visit
