Bruce loaded Dewey into the car and headed for his veterinarian’s office with a small group of friends. “Dewey and I had a favorite song,
Ripple, by the Grateful Dead,” Bruce recalls. “The song came on as we were about to pull into the parking lot. At that moment, I knew I was doing the right thing for Dewey. But God it was so hard to let him go. He winked at me just before he went to sleep.”

THERE IS A ROAD, NO SIMPLE HIGH- WAY. AND IF YOU GO NO ONE MAY FOLLOW. THAT PATH IS FOR YOUR STEPS ALONE. Bruce moved to Florida and wanted
to fulfill his dream of opening a restau- rant in a warehouse. After patiently wait- ing, he found the right place in 2005 near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport or SRQ as it’s commonly known. But, he needed just the right name for the place. “I’m sitting in my car in front of the
place, watching a plane land. And I swear to you, if I’m lying, I’m dying — Ripple by the Grateful Dead comes on. It made me think of Dewey.” And with that, Bruce named his restaurant The Flying Dog Cafe, in honor of his dogs. “Dewey came from Heaven to help
me name this place. And, anyway you want to slice the pie, he helps me every- day,” smiled Bruce. When asked if another dog would
become a part of his life again, Bruce pointed his chin upwards and said, “Why would I want to ruin the journey that He has planned for me? As far as dogs go, I’m two for two. I know the right dog will find me when it’s time.” U
