“Understanding how our dogs learn most effectively is the

first step toward a healthy relationship, and a well-mannered pet. We must learn to develop a two-way line of communica- tion with our dogs,” Victoria reminded us. “People often complain that their dogs don’t listen to

them, but when you think about it, how often is a dog really going to want to do what you’re asking of her? Although you may want her to come back to you from the other end of the yard, she may be fully engaged in an investigation of a fascinat- ing odor,” smiled Victoria. We put a lot of pressure on our dogs to be friendly and

well-mannered with everyone they meet, in and out of the home, even if socializing makes them feel uncomfortable. “Although we have the freedom to choose who we want to greet and who to avoid, our dogs almost never have that luxu- ry,” said Victoria. “Some people just do not understand how threatening and uncomfortable it is for some dogs when their personal space is invaded by a stranger. Of course, because we desire and expect our dogs to be adaptable and emotionally stable at all times (high expec- tations that even we humans can’t live up to), when dogs react negatively to ‘friendly’ human interaction, they are punished for antisocial behav- ior.”

Train Your Dog Positively is Victoria Stilwell’s third book. This is not just another dog train- ing manual, rather serving as more of an accessible and scientific roadmap for a bet- ter understanding of our dogs. It is an easy read, and one book we’ll be going back to again and again for positive reinforcement. Published in the United States by Ten Speed Press. understanding how domi- nance and submission work in healthy canine social relation- ships, is that it has led to the use of training techniques designed to force a dog into a ‘submissive state.’ Those who employ forceful methods believe they are displaying leadership, just like a ‘domi- nant’ dog would do to estab- lish rank. In reality these peo- ple are behaving like socially inappropriate bullies, compro- mising a dog’s ability to learn, and significantly damaging the bond between them.” Our goal should be to

matter to our dogs, by being the source of good things in their lives, so that they will

give us their attention when it is desired or necessary. People always emphasize a need for their dogs to be obedient rather than cooperative. Dog owners issue commands rather than focus on teaching the dog cues and attaching those cues to desired actions or behaviors. Motivating your dog to learn these cues by using rewards that make her feel good, will go a long way toward producing the response you desire, even in the most distracting environments,” said Victoria.
