Marriage Love &
Kayla & Dustin Cribb NDC Photography In December 2000 at her church’s Christmas play, 12-year-old Kayla Bishop met
16-year-old Dustin Cribb. “I was wearing overalls and a floppy leather hat. Dustin came with my oldest sister’s boyfriend (and now husband). I was in the play and met Dustin aſterwards in our fellowship hall. At the time, I thought he was just an- other friend that would come to hang out with the big group my two older sisters hung out with. Boy, was I wrong!” The more he came over to her house, the more her feelings grew. “I began to develop a slight crush. My parents let me hang out with the big group of friends, knowing I would be in the protection of my two older sisters. We would all go to the river, the movies and have numerous cookouts at our friends’ houses. He even came to my 13th birthday party, and we had our first dance to Aero- smith’s ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.’” One day during a visit to the sunflower field on Dustin’s family farm, he confessed his love for her. “He told me that one day he’d marry me, that there was something very special between us and we’d be together one day. Being 13-years-old, I loved the idea of spending the rest of my life with him but wasn’t so sure about his prediction.” Unfortunately, the two went their separate ways. “I was heartbroken, realizing I was losing one of my best friends. That’s when I really knew he was the one for me.” They were reunited the summer before her senior year in high school. For their first date, he took her to Outback. “We talked pretty much all night.” July 14, 2006 is a date she will always remember - the night Dustin asked her to be officially his on the front steps of her
parents’ house. Kayla admits that it was his confident and strong personality that made her fall so deeply in love with him. It didn’t hurt that he also displayed an abundance of faith in their relationship throughout the years. “This is what I knew I wanted in a husband - someone who believes in us and wants to be by my side for years and years to come. He also enjoyed being around my family and coming to church with me, two more qualities I find important. He has supported me in anything I have wanted to do or accomplish, and he stood faithfully by my side. His witty remarks and tolerance for my corny jokes doesn’t hurt either!” Easter weekend 2011, Dustin visited Kayla, who was studying for final exams during
her first year of physical therapy school at MUSC. The couple decided to tour downtown Charleston on foot, see the movie ‘Water for Elephants’ and have dinner at Outback. They ended the night by strolling along the Battery and through a park. “We decided to sit on a park bench and people watch since we find so much enjoyment out of that. He began talking about how far we’ve come from that day in the sunflower field. He told me he had an Easter present for me and took a pretty jeweled red egg from his pocket. I took it, telling him how beautiful it was. Not exactly sure what he wanted me to do with it, I just held it and thanked him. He then said, ‘It opens up, too.’ All of a sudden, everything clicked. He said a few other words, but I think I was concentrating on how to open that egg! I opened it and saw the most gorgeous ring. I then spent the rest of the weekend giggly, smiling uncontrollably, calling family and friends, and not studying!”
