Radiography Editor’s Choice Award
Article acknowledges serious limitations of the linear no-threshold model for determining cancer risks
Radiography is very pleased to announce that the Editor’s Choice Award for 2012 is an article written by Richard Harbron entitled Cancer risks from low dose exposure to ionising radiation – Is the linear no-threshold model still relevant?
Editor-in-Chief, Professor Richard Price, said that it was a very well written and challenging scientific article that reviewed current knowledge of the biological consequences of diagnostic radiography.
“It was a soundly researched article backed
by evidence with 84 citations which while not rejecting the use of the linear no-threshold model for determining cancer risks, acknowledged serious limitations. “Congratulations to Richard Harbron for his hard work and a well-
deserved award.” Richard will receive a £500 Elsevier book voucher for the article which appeared in a special cancer themed edition (Vol. 18 Issue 1 Feb 2012 on pages 28-33).

Breast Radiotherapy Interest Group seeks international input
A Breast Radiotherapy Interest Group has been set up for radiographers who are developing specialist expertise in this field. The radiotherapy technique for breast cancer varies considerably across UK centres and these in turn differ to techniques employed across the globe. Differences in practice exist in terms of immobilisation methods, imaging protocols, treatment delivery approaches (3D conformal versus intensity modulated radiotherapy, cardiac avoidance techniques), information provision or advice to patients. Many centres now have their own local breast cancer special interest group.
However, a Breast Radiotherapy Interest Group (BRIG) that has members from across the globe has the potential to allow the sharing of good practice, cross fertilisation of ideas, development of innovative approaches to current challenges in the delivery of radiotherapy for breast cancer patients and to drive forward co-ordinated research.
The potential learning
opportunities within a network of this nature are enormous. Within this network participants can draw on and share professional experiences, knowledge and real-life situations to discuss and debate different approaches

BRIG now has a Google discussion group where members can post topics, share experiences, and raise questions for other members to contribute. The group aims to update its current database of techniques to share with members and to develop open learning resources (based on the expertise of the network members) to be shared within a wider professional community. BRIG is open to all qualified practicing
therapeutic radiographers in the UK (and the world) with an interest in breast cancer radiotherapy issues. If you would like to
