UK Council: Why?
By John Burton, UK Council member for Scotland
Travelling back to Edinburgh on a train that is now at least an hour delayed, I’ve got some time to fill. I was asked to write a little bit about what it’s like to be a UK Council member, and now seems as good a time as any to think about it. Before I came on to Council, I suppose I didn’t really know what it would be like. I had an idea in my head of what it might entail, but the reality is actually quite different. Let’s see if I can make
any sense of it.
What did I think it was going to be like – well I thought that there would probably be lots of travelling back and forward to London – I got that bit right. I expected that there would probably be lots of papers to read through – again, I got that spot on. Thinking about all the
paperwork – I’ve been a member of the SoR since I started training in 1986, and feel more engaged with what it does, and what it means to be a member than at any time in those 28 years. I don’t think I was expecting that, when I put my name forward for UK Council... I guess I was expecting to be more involved, but I didn’t expect to get such a personal boost from it, if you see what I mean.
What else was I expecting? Serious meetings full of scary SoR people... I didn’t even come
close on that one! Of course there are meetings, and don’t forget all that paperwork to go through, but I hadn’t really factored in that it would still basically be a room full of radiographers, and one thing we’re actually quite good at is mixing up serious with a good helping of fun. (Oops, could be in trouble there for giving away that UK Council meetings aren’t all work, work, work – they are actually quite enjoyable!) Another thought: I already mentioned that coming on to UK Council has made me feel more personally and professionally engaged with radiography as a whole – but more than that, it’s also having an impact on my own practice. I suppose that I just think about things in a slightly different way, and have a little bit more insight. (Small things can lead to big changes, now where have I heard that before?)
So what am I saying... Is it a good thing to be on UK Council? Absolutely. It’s giving me a greater understanding of the importance of our profession, it’s benefiting me on a personal and professional level and, most importantly, I’ve become friends with all those (not so) scary SoR people! Are you up for the challenge? Turn to page 5 for information on how to get involved...
