New figures show increase in the number of people diagnosed with cancer
Cancer Research UK has published figures which show that the number of people being diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year has hit more than 330,000 for the first time.
A press release circulated
by the charity says: “While more people than ever are being diagnosed with cancer, research has led to more people surviving the disease. Survival has doubled in the last 40 years thanks to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. “In 2001 there were around 283,000 cases diagnosed which means there has been an increase of nearly 50,000 over 10 years.
“The main reason for the increase in cases is the ageing population. As there are more people living longer, more will develop the disease.”
The figures were
published as part of Cancer Research UK’s campaign to raise awareness of the importance of research in beating cancer and reducing its devastating impact.
Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, commented: “These figures reinforce the vital need for more research to better prevent, treat and cure cancer. As the population ages, more people than ever before will be told: ‘you have cancer’.
“Research is the only
way we’ll be able to reduce the devastating impact of the disease. One day we will beat cancer. The more research we do, the sooner that day will come.” Commenting on the
figures, SoR professional and education manager Charlotte Beardmore said: “More cancer is being
detected earlier through the excellent screening programmes in this country. This early detection gives patients the chance to live longer as their cancer is smaller and more easily treatable. “Survival rates are better than they were in the past and patients’ quality of life post-treatment is, in the main, much better, as treatments are more sophisticated and can be delivered with millimetre precision. “However, cancer treatment in this country does require ongoing investment from the government to ensure that we, as professionals, are able to offer cutting-edge, evidence-based treatments. Research needs to be supported to continue to increase cure rates and to help patients whose outcomes and survival rates are still poor.”
‘Treatment requires ongoing investment from the government,’ says SoR.
I&TP student competition 2014 Changes to AQP
In 2013 Imaging & Therapy Practice decided to hold a competition and publish an issue devoted to articles written by radiography students. It was so successful that the editorial board have decided to run it again this year. HEIs are invited to submit a piece of work produced by a radiography student or group of students in their final undergraduate year. This work might be an essay on a topic relevant to the profession, a case study, a critique of an
aspect of practice, or another contribution entirely. HEIs which offer courses in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography are able to submit an article from each specialty, otherwise the limit is a single piece of work.
A panel of judges at the CoR will evaluate the entries and choose the five best articles from those that have been submitted. These will be published in the student edition of the magazine in October 2014. There is a cash prize for each winner and an invitation to the 2015 student
conference (all expenses paid) to receive an award. The final deadline date for submissions is 23 May 2014.

There have been some recent announcements regarding changes to the AQP application and qualification processes, writes the SoR’s Alexandra Lipton. Access to the Any Qualified Provider (AQP) online system will cease to all users on Friday 28 February. The decision to procure services using the AQP model will rest entirely with commissioners. Advertisements for AQP offers will be placed on the NHSSupply2Health website, with a link to local e-procurement sites or an attached word format questionnaire. Offers should be accompanied by a service specification document and a qualification information document.
The Stage 1 compliance checks currently evaluated centrally
by the DH will be performed locally by commissioners from 14 March . A second stage service delivery evaluation will also be performed locally by commissioners. The provider will then be identified as Qualified or Not
Qualified. If you are a provider who has applied to AQP offers previously and wish to access your completed application forms, you must download and save these forms locally, prior to 28 February.
