A.G. Barr and Britvic to be


investigated The Office of Fair Trading have referred the proposed acquisition by A.G. BARR plc of Britvic plc to the Competition Commission for further investigation following concerns that it could reduce competition between certain brands of these two soft drinks suppliers. Barr and Britvic are two of the three main players in the UK that offer a wide range of soft drink brands. The other is Coca-Cola Enterprises. Barr and Britvic supply a range of carbonated and non-carbonated soft drink brands: Barr's brands include Orangina, KA and Rubicon as well as IRN BRU, which has a particularly strong presence in Scotland. Britvic's brands include Robinsons, Fruit Shoot, Tango and Pepsi. The OFT's investigation found that the acquisition raised competition concerns with respect to the loss of the competitive constraint from some of Britvic's brands on Barr's IRN BRU and Orangina brands. Consumer survey evidence submitted by the merging parties showed that Coca-Cola and other brands supplied by Coca-Cola Enterprises were important alternative choices for many drinkers of Barr's IRN BRU and Orangina brands. However, it also showed that some of Britvic's brands - in particular Pepsi and Tango - were also sufficiently close alternatives to raise competition concerns. As a result, the OFT could not rule out the possibility of higher prices post-merger.


Sustain call for

First Degree The Minister of State for


Agriculture and Food, David Heath MP has launched the UK's first accredited engineering degree entirely dedicated to food and drink manufacturing. Offered exclusively at Sheffield Hallam University, the new degree, MEng Food Engineering, hopes to combat the difficulties faced by FMCG companies when recruiting engineers. The degree offers students guaranteed work placements with food and drink companies, providing key employment experience and skills. So far some of the high profile names on board are Nestlé, General Mills, McCains Foods, Warburtons and Mars. The creation of the degree comes as part of Graduate Excellence, a project to


create employment-ready engineering graduates for the food and drink manufacturing industry.


BRC invite views on


nutritional labels The British Retail Consortium are launching a consultation seeking views on what the new front of pack nutritional labelling system for food should look like. The consultation, which has been produced in collaboration with the Department of Health, asks how interested parties want the new hybrid system for displaying nutritional


information to be presented and positioned on food packaging. The Department of Health will then draw on the consultation responses when it makes its national recommendation on the content and look of the new labelling system. British Retail Consortium Deputy Food

McCain Foods has undergone a major brand overhaul across their entire portfolio. In partnership with BrandOpus, McCain have introduced a new logo, the first change in over 50 years. The new brand identity aims to


encapsulate the natural landscape of the previous design, establishing the logo as the sunshine, hoping to bring warmth to the McCain brand. The changes come as part of McCain Foods GB strategy to drive brand and category growth. Mark Hodge, McCain head of brand, said, “[It] will help to segment, sign-post and simplify the McCain products range, and reflects our move towards a portfolio encompassing more potato meal solutions". The new packaging is appearing in-store from February.
