the FMCG industry, there is still much to cel- ebrate from 2012. It has been a year of Royally British celebrations, as well as one of cheering sporting heroes.

It was the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, as well as the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A patriotic fervor swept the country and a plethora of limited edition prod- ucts were released in celebration of both Liz and our sporting heroes. The iconic red, white and blue of the Union Jack crept onto the packaging of a wide variety of brands, and we relished in the best of British produce. Our national pride swelled further with the incredible success of our athletes in both the Olympic and Paralympic games. With our screens filled with such athletic prowess it forced us, as a nation, reflect upon our own personal health, and once again opened up the ongoing debate of personal versus corporate responsibility. However, as the Thame's Jubilee Pageant proved, the British weather remained wholly unpredictable. Droughts early in the year, followed by record downpours in April and June wreaked havoc with British crops. As a result, consumers saw a stark rise in fresh produce prices, at a time when such increases could be least afforded.
In many respects, it has been a challenging year for FMCG brands, but not one without its successes, and so there is always reason to celebrate.
Mezzanine success
The mezzanine floor in mixed leaf salad producer, Bourne Prepared Produce, part of Bakkavor, needed repairing as part of a planned maintenance programme. Bourne contacted Kemtile for help and advice on how the mezzanine floor could be improved and returned to service quickly. A further problem facing Kemtile was the fact that the production area is a chilled environment to keep produce as fresh as possible and of course the client wanted the project completed as quickly as possible. One product of the UCRETE range that had recently been developed was UCRETE Fast, which was ideal for the contract. The existing structure was stripped down, refurbished and welded for additional strength. A mesh was incorporated in the surface and UCRETE Fast was laid in two sections over a two day period. The yellow colour helped to give the factory area a bright clean appearance. Kemtile had recommended UCRETE Fast as it is a fast curing resin concrete that will cure in five hours, even in cold conditions. It also suitable for the food industry as it is a solvent free resin, which produces no odour, so other areas of the factory could continue without interruption. The product is also steam cleanable and can be used in areas where temperatures can be as low as -40ºC. It is also resistant to a wide range of chemicals and has above average slip resistance (40-45). Jim Cullen, engineering services manager at Bourne, commented “The project went exactly to plan and we were able to walk on the re-laid surface in the time the contractor had specified. We are really pleased with the result”. For more information call 01925 763045, email

Cambridge Engineered Solutions (CES) were pleased to become the first metal belt manufacturer in the world to receive the Islamic Services of America’s (I.S.A.) Halal certification. By incorporating the Halal compliance system into manufacturing processes, Cambridge qualified the belts, as well as the process, to the I.S.A.’s stringent standards. I.S.A. reviewed Cambridge’s production and materials at their headquarters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and once determined compliant, I.S.A. visited the Cambridge Engineered Solutions headquarters in Cambridge, Maryland, for a full-inspection of the manufacturing facilities. This onsite inspection verified that CES operations also met Halal standards. Cambridge Engineered Solutions makes every effort to demonstrate its dedication to customer’s needs, including the global Halal market.
