Today’s active duty United States Air Force (USAF) general officer ranks include 26 women and four more who will soon pin on stars. Most are the first women to hold the post. Maj. Gen. Jeanne Holm became the first female Air Force general officer in 1971 and helped clear the way for the Re- serve Officers` Training course (ROTC) and service academies to open up to women in the 1970s. Today, we see the fruits of those labors and are continu- ally reminded it takes a career to grow a general officer. As new milestones occur, recognition helps grow the next generation of leaders and encourages those currently in the ranks to reach their full potential.
Lt. Gen. Darrell D. Jones Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C
Our most senior female general officer on active duty is Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger, the first
female four-star in the Air Force and the first female commander of Air Force Material Command. Lt. Gen. Susan Helms served as an astronaut and was the first military woman in space. She holds the record for the longest space walk and today commands the 14th Air Force. Lt. Gen. Judy Fedder is the USAF’s first female deputy chief of staff. She will soon be joined on the staff of logistics, installations and mission support at USAF Headquarters by Brig. Gen. Teresa Carter who has been selected for major general and to become the Air Force Civil Engineer. She is the first female civil engineer in the general officer ranks and the first woman to hold that post.
Recently, Maj. Gen. Lori Robinson was selected for promotion to Lt. Gen. and will soon become the vice commander at Air Combat Command. In addition, Maj. Gen. Michelle Johnson was selected for promotion to Lt. Gen. and to serve as Superintendent of the Air Force Academy, the first woman in that position. Brig. Gen. Dana Born also serves as the first female dean of faculty at the academy, a post she has held since 2004. Maj. Gen. (retired) Susan Desjardins was the commandant of cadets at the academy from 2005-2008 and the first female in that post.
Lt. Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski is the commander, Space and Missile Systems Center, Air Force Space Command. She is responsible for more than 5,000 employees nationwide and an annual budget of $10 billion. Maj. Gen. Wendy Masiello is the deputy assistant secretary for contracting in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition. She is responsible for all aspects of contracting relating to the acquisition of weapon systems, logistics, operational, and contingency support for the Air Force. And, Maj. Gen. Sharon Dunbar is the commander of the Air Force District of Washington, responsible for all air force personnel in the national capital region. The list of proud and accomplished women goes on and on.
