Welcome to the fi rst edition of a new look SPN – we hope you enjoy it and would welcome any feedback and thoughts on the new design of our pages. The change in logo, brand and magazine layout are the fi rst of a number of changes that are planned for 2013. A new look website plus expanding on to Facebook to complement our Twitter activities will be next up, so watch this space. Also, if you currently only receive the magazine, please go to our website and sign up for our regular emailer as we will be carrying more news electronically in 2013. Failing that, be sure to follow us on your social media platform of choice!

With a Christmas break which seemed to last an eternity, many people being laid low with one sort of illness or another and now snow affecting many parts of the country, for me personally it has felt like a sluggish start to 2013. I sincerely hope the weather in particular is not an omen for the rest of the year – the industry could really do with favourable conditions in 2013 following one of the dullest and wettest years since records began. For me, the truth is good weather should be

seen as a bonus and businesses should be planning their futures without any reliance on it. Yes it’s tough out there but with all things considered, the industry appears to be holding up fairly well and there are still lots of opportunities and some sectors actually seem to be quite buoyant – so there are reasons to be cheerful, at least to some degree. With numerous new regulations and standards either coming into effect or at least on the horizon, the amount of new products available, especially energy saving ones is a good news story all round. For retailers of products, it means opportunities exist to sell upgrades to achieve compliance. For operators and owners, it means reduced running costs and savings going forward – something that is particularly welcome as energy costs keep rising and show no signs of falling any time soon.

A number of these new products were on display at Piscine in Lyon but many will be viewed for the fi rst time at either or both of the UK shows that are taking place this year.

As I mentioned last issue, it’s good to get out and speak to those in the know about the latest products and services that the industry has to offer as it can make a tremendous difference to how you run your business or have an impact on that of your clients. Keeping abreast of the latest trends and technologies really does raise the levels of enthusiasm. We ourselves will be exhibiting at SPATEX in Brighton. Why not come and see us on the upper fl oor, stand number U140. We hope to see you there.
