Council Gives Go Ahead For Grimsby New Leisure Centre

People in North East Lincolnshire are set to benefit from a new £8.4m leisure centre after the council formally approved proposals to improve the borough’s leisure facilities. In December, North East Lincolnshire Council gave approval to the first phase of a programme to upgrade the area’s leisure facilities – including a brand new leisure centre in Cromwell Road, Grimsby. Building the new leisure centre in front of the existing Grimsby Leisure Centre means there will be no disruption to services during construction. Swimming is one of the most popular sports in North East Lincolnshire with about 300,000 swims per year at council pools and Grimsby Swimming Pool (Scartho Baths) will remain open until the new leisure centre is up and running. The new leisure centre design has been drawn up by sport and leisure specialists Faulknerbrowns Architects whose impressive portfolio boasts training facilities that helped propel Team GB to London 2012 Olympic glory last summer.

The centre will be a modern, energy efficient building with

excellent accessibility for disabled people and will include an eight lane 25m county competition standard swimming pool built to Sport England and ASA criteria; seating for 250 spectators and a further 250 competitors; an easy access learner pool, 17m wide and 7m long; separate wet and dry changing rooms, fully fitted disability changing rooms and a dry sauna. The eight lane 25m pool covers an area of 425 sq m and the learner pool 119 sq m, giving a total pool area of 544 sq m and both pools will be accessible to all users.

Cllr Mick Burnett, portfolio holder for tourism and leisure at North East Lincolnshire Council, said the authority had consulted and listened to views from across the borough about developing future leisure facilities in the area.

He added: “There are very few councils investing this kind of figure in leisure facilities these days. “While Scartho Baths holds special memories for thousands and thousands of people and has served the borough well for decades, we must look to the future and create facilities fit for generations to come.”
