POOL & SPA INDUSTRY 2013 – A Year Of Development

BSPF MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRIS HAYES LOOKS AHEAD TO A YEAR WHICH SHOULD SEE IMPROVED STANDARDS FOR THE WHOLE INDUSTRY

H

appy New Year! I hope that you have had time over the festive period to reflect on the past year. The Olympics and Paralympics will

live long in the memory, but just as any great athlete will savour their success, they will then also take time with their team to review and then focus on their next goals. The main goals for the industry in 2013 will always be to provide quality goods and services to other businesses and consumers and to respond to changes affecting our industry. However, this year the industry must specifically address the impact that another pool show will have on the ability of the industry to fund itself to undertake the challenges being presented at home and abroad. In terms of regulations, this will be an important year in Europe for the work on domestic swimming pool standards, as the first documents on pool construction and installation will be coming out for public consultation sometime from Easter onwards. The timescale for the finished versions of the documents to be available are currently scheduled for 2014. The pool and spa industry is directly represented in Europe by SPATA, who are the UK representatives on behalf of the BSI (British Standards Institution). The UK has an opportunity to discuss what is happening in Europe through SPATA, ISPE and other wet leisure organisations who all meet in London at BSI’s

headquarters on a regular basis. In between meetings, SPATA’s Technical Committee is discussing the content of the standards to try and ensure a good quality document can be produced. It is always worth pointing out that the UK is one voice amongst 31 other countries and so it is vital to work closely with our colleagues to find a suitable way forward to achieve an acceptable standard throughout the relevant parts of Europe. I am indebted to Patrick Thorpe from Certikin International for support at these meetings to ensure we can try and get the most relevant drafting of the documents. One of my New Year’s wishes would be that through BISHTA, there will be an opportunity to discuss the drafting of European standards for domestic hot tubs and swim spas at some point in 2013 and discussions are already underway with some of the countries that may be interested in sharing their expertise. It is also a goal this year to work with colleagues across the world (but especially in North America) to discuss common themes for inclusion in standards. SPATA is again planning its inspection programme and with the team comprising Peter Lang, Jim Gordon and Tim Bareham, it is hoped they will be able to inspect a significant number of the members this year. In this issue of SPN, you will find an article from Peter on the inspection process and some of the lessons learned.

Despite the record rainfalls, the BSPF will be working with the relevant water companies to plan for the next time there are water shortages. A water efficiency code of practice is to be drafted to demonstrate how professional companies deal with water conservation. Anyone who has a view on what should be included in this code of practice should contact the BSPF office. This year (more than ever), the need for timely information to be provided to the industry is vital, as companies in membership organisations such as BISHTA, SPATA and also ISPE are working hard for their respective members. Both BISHTA and SPATA continue

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SPATA & BISHTA AWARDS SPONSORS

to keep their respective members abreast of information on a weekly basis with an electronic newsletter and the 200th issue was recently sent out. This year, there will be a move towards providing some versions of the newsletter to current non members and there are plans for an increasing number of trade releases to keep all of the media informed of our plans. The growing number of factsheets and other resources being planned should also assist members in keeping updated with relevant information for our industry. In terms of SPATEX, it promises to be a great event to profile our industry. I am very grateful to all the exhibitors for their support and would like to thank Michele Bridle and Helen Mulingani for their hard work and tenacious commitment, ably supported by the SPATEX directors. During SPATEX, the SPATA and BISHTA

Awards will again be held at the Grand Hotel and with the companies battling it out there is going to be some very serious competition! If you would like to attend this black tie event, featuring the Mike Smith Orchestra and Singers, please contact the office to confirm your booking and tickets are priced at just £80.00 + VAT per person. Please remember this event is open to the whole industry. Once again I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the sponsors for supporting this event. SPN
