I have been interested in the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ shoebox appeal since taking part in primary school. I love filling boxes because I know they are going straight to the children who need them most, at the time of year when the majority of us expect to receive presents. It is such an amazing opportunity to help someone feel loved, because for some children, the shoeboxes are filled with the only toys they will receive all year. This year I filled fourteen and I know I don’t take for granted what I have as much because of my involvement. I visited the sorting warehouse a year ago and was inspired to launch the appeal at my own church. I advertised it there, visited several groups and was impressed with how many people managed to get involved. With families, individuals, small groups and the Sunday school contributing, we collected 142 boxes altogether! I followed them to the warehouse again a few weeks ago and it was great to feel a part of such an international project. I spent the day packing and checking boxes and found out that our local warehouse in Dunfermline checked 2284 boxes this year! I hope to encourage as many people as possible to take part in this worthwhile project. Ame Whitehead, S4 Beaconhurst School
