Five steps to re-energise your career

Are you thinking “another year, same old job”, or “how do I find work?” The job market is tough right now, but it’s not impossible. Here are five steps to improve your chances in 2013

1. Get clear what you want Get clear on your desired career goal, both immediate and long term.

means balancing your ideal work with the practicalities of what people will employ you for, and your income requirements.

usually possible to come to a balance, if you look hard enough.

2. Sharpen your offer What are your key skills, both transferable and technical skills? What have you achieved? Your activities outside work might give you skills that could be offered in the employment market.

information at interview.

3. Get your marketing right Your CV needs to reflect your sharpened offer, in two pages maximum – employers don’t have time to read long CV’s. They want to know what you can do for them and no more. A good online profile on LinkedIn will help too.

4. Build your network Only 20% of jobs are filled through job adverts or through recruiters. The rest are networked into, the ‘hidden job market.’ To be successful, you need to tap this market. Talk to people you know, to find out what’s available and use your network to find new contacts who can help.

5. Plan your steps You cannot cross a Canyon in one jump. If you need a career change, then plan some intermediate steps.

That might include

contract or part-time work. People who fail to change career often fail because they try to do it all at once.

Good luck with 2013. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it’s time to change...
