Congratulations to the winners of the writing competition we ran with Figment Creative Writing. We had lots of fabulous entries but John Mcharg won with his short story, The Old Star and Kate McFarlane with her wonderful poem. These and the 2 runners up in each category will also be published on the website. Well done to everyone who entered!
The Old Star by John Mcharg, Dunblane
Frost hung in the air as Sarah stared into the clear winter night sky. “Mummy” she said “why are the stars twinkling?” “I don’t know darling, they just always do”. Sarah stared and wondered. Much much more than one billion and one miles away two of the stars were having a chat. “Why are you sad?” asked one star to the other. “Because I no longer shine as bright as I used to.” “Why do you no longer shine as bright?” “Because I’m very, very old…” “Well then if you are so very old have you seen a great many things?” “Yes I have, a great many lifetimes worth of wonderful things”. “Can you please tell me about them?” “I would be delighted to tell you, where do you want me to start?” “At the beginning please.” And as the old star started telling its story, it shone and twinkled as bright as the day it was born.

Frost hung in the air Crisp and bright
Twinkling, bejewelled Glistening starlight Hope springs eternal Beneath the moonglow
Resolutions and promises All begin tomorrow We are so earnest On the fi rst of the year Praying and wishing Without any fear
For really good health A little bit of wealth
To let the rain be at rest This cold weather the best
Breath like snow coloured puff s Gloved hands pulled into cuff s Warm hats covering hair As frost hung in the air.
