Education
Staying in education or training after 16
CHANGE is on the way for teenagers as they reach the end of school Year 11. From September, young people will be
expected to stay in education or training until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 – following a change in national government policy. This change is called ‘Raising the Participation Age’. This change is not about raising the school
leaving age, but it is about making sure that young people take advantage of a range of options for continuing with learning. They will be encouraged to:
Continue in full-time education, such as school or college. Take on an apprenticeship. Get involved in a part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week. Anyone in Year 11 in September 2012 will be expected to
continue in education or training until at least the end of the school year in which they turn 17. If they are currently in Year 10 or below, they will be required to continue until at least their 18th birthday. There is help available for those who will be thinking about the next step, including the
www.kentchoices4u.com website,
which contains information about a wide range of courses and careers, as well as higher education and employment advice. Taking part in some form of education and training after
leaving school gives young people the best chance to get the skills and qualifications that universities and employers are looking for. Evidence shows that getting qualifications at this age can help people earn more throughout their whole lifetime. The ‘Raising Participation Age’ initiative will mean that all young people are given the opportunity, provision and support they need to learn and participate after the age of 16.
