Town Profile Hengist is one of four Kent restaurants run by
television chef Richard Phillips. Named after a former King of Kent, the riverside eatery dates back to the 1560s but has been decadently restored so contemporary suede walls and crystal chandeliers sit alongside original beams and stonework. Diners can expect to sample experimental food, along the lines of soused red mullet salad and mandarin and olive oil cake, as well as classic dishes with a twist.

Once home to the Maidstone Zoo, Cobtree Manor Park
now houses a golf course and a café and is the perfect place for a picnic or a stroll. The 300-acre park was given to the people of the borough of Maidstone in 1951 by twelve-times Mayor of Maidstone and soon-to-be High Sheriff of Kent Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt-Drake, who also donated horse drawn vehicles to the Museum of Carriages named after him and pieces of silver, including the chain of office for the deputy mayor. The Cobtree Charity Trust set up by Sir Garrard still runs the park today and makes donations to about 60 local charities. A range of organised, informative walks take place at the park throughout the year or visitors can follow marked routes for an independent adventure. Cobtree Cabin Café serves warming bacon sandwiches and hot meals such as ham, egg and chips alongside cakes, drinks and ice creams to replenish energy levels after a ramble. Cobtree Manor Park Golf Club offers a short yet interesting course with trees and water acting as hazards.
