Free activities for children at your local library

KEEPING young children amused during the long winter days is, at times, a test of even the best parent's patience and can put a strain on your finances. If this strikes a chord then taking a trip to your local library could be well worth your while. As well as a magnificent selection of children's books, most

local libraries offer a selection of free fun activities to delight and amuse children of all ages. The Kent History and Library Centre at James Whatman

Way, Maidstone, holds regular free activities. Every Wednesday, during term time, preschool children (aged 21/2 - 5 years) can take part in a story and craft session

at 2pm-2.30pm. Come along and enjoy popular stories and have fun with art and crafts. On Fridays during term time, the library holds the popular

Baby Rhyme Time sessions. Sessions are from 10.30am-10.50am for parents and babies under 12 months, and another at 11.30am-11.50am for parents and children over the age of one. No pre booking is required; just turn up and join in. During the forthcoming half term, February 18-22, there

will be a selection of workshops for 4-11 year olds linked to the Magnificent Manuscripts Exhibition currently on display at the centre. For details and to book a place phone the Kent History and Library Centre on 08458 247 200 or email historyandlibrarycentre@kent.gov.uk. If you would like to do something a little closer to home then contact your local library for further details of their regular sessions including Baby Rhyme Time, Storytimes, Toddler Time and Story Circle. Full details can be found on the KCC website at www.kent.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/ libraries/children_and_families.aspx. It is always a good idea to phone to check an event is on

before travelling a long distance, as very occasionally sessions may be cancelled or subject to change.
