Cobtree Manor Park is also home to Tyland Barn, the
headquarters of Kent Wildlife Trust. The restored 17th century barn contains a large exhibition on wildlife and conservation and is home to bees, tadpoles and nesting birds at various times of the year. There is a wheelchair-accessible nature park with a short nature trail, café, gift shop and picnic area.
Celebrating 150 years of the county’s history, Kent Life, also
on Sir Garrard’s former estate, in Sandling, has something to attract visitors of all ages. Sheep, cows, horses, rabbits, alpacas and many more animals are bred at Kent Life, and children can make friends with some of the cuddlier creatures while watching a working farm in action. Older visitors are invited to take a trip down memory lane by exploring the
and more. Kent Life puts on children’s events during the school holidays and has indoor and outdoor play areas and various gardens to explore.
A short drive from Aylesford is the village of Kit’s Coty
where visitors will find a communal burial site dating back to the Neolithic period. Looked after by English Heritage, the bigger of two burial chambers, Kit’s Coty House, remains largely intact, with three upright stones acting as walls and a capstone providing shelter. Its smaller neighbour Little Kit’s Coty House, also called the Countless Stones, has been reduced to a jumble of rocks. Both monuments stand in a field with exquisite views across the North Downs and Medway Valley. Similar sites in the area, in various states, are Coldrum Stones, Addington long barrow and Chestnuts
