The 28-mile route links Rochester and Tonbridge, following the banks of the River Medway and passing orchards, hop gardens and the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as it traverses the picturesque Kent countryside. Another well-used walkway in the area is the North Downs Way, which starts in Farnham, Surrey, and passes north of Maidstone before heading down towards Canterbury and the White Cliffs of Dover. Much of the 153-mile National Trail follows the legendary Pilgrims Way, which was used by people journeying from Winchester to Canterbury Cathedral to pray at the shrine of Thomas Becket, the former Archbishop of Canterbury who was murdered there in 1170. Friars when they visit Aylesford, De Vere Village Hotel in nearby Sandling provides a good base for exploration and has its own restaurant, pub, café, gym and swimming pool. Premier Inn hotels can be found at Sandling and nearby Allington, while Hamlets Hotel and Restaurant is just down the road in Larkfield, and The King and Queen pub in East Malling doubles as a guesthouse. For hearty, value-for-money pub grub in a lovely location, visit the Malta Inn Beefeater Grill. Set on the riverside at Sandling, and with an outdoor eating and drinking area for the summer, the Malta Inn is easily accessible from the M20 so is a popular stop-off on the way home from day trips as well as a destination pub. Steaks, grills and burgers are specialities but vegetarians are catered for and roast dinners are available on Sundays.
