BELIEVED by many to be England’s oldest village, picturesque Aylesford sits on the River Medway about 4 miles northwest of Maidstone. A mix of historic buildings, fine dining, country walks and popular attractions ensures there is plenty to entertain anyone who visits for 24 hours.
A walk through the riverside village, where people first began to settle in Neolithic times, is a treat in itself. Shops, homes, restaurants and The Chequers, a pub with a patio overlooking the river, are housed in quaint black and white Tudor buildings. A walk up the hill towards the town’s ancient priory takes the visitor past St Peter and St Paul’s Church, a popular wedding venue with sections that are almost 1,000 years old.

Pilgrims have been travelling to The Friars, commonly
referred to as Aylesford Priory, for hundreds of years. Today the site, open 365 days a year, is a successful combination of religious retreat and tourist attraction. The Friars was founded in 1242 when the first Carmelites arrived from the Holy Land, and on-site guesthouses still cater for those visiting for organised retreats or conferences as well as people looking for a quiet getaway.
