Senior living Winter time

WINTER can be a very long, cold and lonely time for people living in Kent, but especially for older citizens. However, there are lots of options for people to keep warm, active and happy this winter. There are more than enough social groups and activities happening to keep everyone happy. Shopping can be a problem for those who are frail, so Brighter Futures offers a shopping service in one of its mini buses, and Age UK Maidstone has a one- to-one shopping service. Age UK Maidstone runs day care

facilities every day of the week at various locations in the Maidstone borough. Lenham and Staplehurst both have active retirement clubs, and tea or coffee mornings. Bearsted runs a Wednesday lunch club; all you need to do is contact the local parish council or the named community warden. The Hazlitt Theatre holds regular

ticketed events for the older generation such as tea dances, and the Salvation

Army has a senior band that any keen instrument player can join. Kent Adult

Education Centre runs courses to keep those who like to learn and enrich their minds occupied. To keep the body healthy, Age UK Maidstone offers a foot care and home bathing service. Foot care clinics are scattered around the borough and for those who find it difficult to leave home, foot care can come to them. Aqua aerobic classes run at the local leisure centre in Mote Park can help keep you nimble, and for the men there is an over 50s circuit class. Age UK Maidstone runs seated

exercises classes once a week in Bearsted and Brighter Futures can help

improve posture and stability, while also offering transport to allow everyone to attend the classes. Lastly, to keep the mind healthy,

Maidstone MIND has a free counselling service, while local libraries, Age UK Maidstone and the Kent Adult Education centre all have free computer classes and audio books. The Kent Association for the Blind has free digital talking newspapers that can be sent out to you. Winter needn’t be a dreaded time, but a time to keep busy.
