Listen to the blues in Saltburn
T By Mike Morrissey
he one-year-old blues club at Saltburn is an upbeat place to escape from “the blues,”
says gig promoter Harry Simpson, who has ambitious plans for 2013. “Some people feel blues music is miserable.
But it’s not, it’s often very upbeat,” said Harry who started the not-for-profi t club because he saw a gap in the local market. “In fact the most famous blues song of all is called Let the good times roll!” Harry has lined up a list of national and international names in the blues scene to play at Saltburn’s Spa Hotel. American singer Kirsten Thien, who appeared at the Club in October, started the big-name push. “I hope to attract not just people from Saltburn
but from all over the region and beyond,” said Harry, a former police inspector who is now a personal trainer based in Saltburn. “We have recently created a website www.
saltburnbluesclub.co.uk where there is a page dedicated to Saltburn and its attractions to encourage people to come to the Club and make a weekend of it.” Many local businesses sponsor the website and
the raffl e. More are invited to sponsor activities. The Spa is regularly described as one of the best venues in the area by artists performing there with a lively atmosphere and appreciative audience. The hotel overlooks Saltburn beach and pier,
which features in the blues club’s material. Discounted room rates are available for visitors attending concerts. For the Christmas gig on December 21 the Club welcomes back Doc Brown and the Groovecats, of Newcastle, supported by local band Skinny Blue with vocalist Martin Colley.

www.wegottickets.com History note: The blues or, “rhythm and blues,” originated in America’s Deep South about 100 years ago. And a lot of rock music comes from the blues era - the music of the Beatles, the Animals, the Rolling Stones and Teesside’s Chris Rea were inspired by R & B music, says Harry.

old friend back to the ‘Cutty Wren’ on November 29th, when Martyn Wyndham- Read guests. He’s been known on the scene for many years, singing the great songs of the old Australian outback and he has the fi ne voice to sing them. But he’s also one of the foremost interpreters of the work of nationally-known local writer Graeme Miles, who has given us so many great songs about Teesside and Cleveland. Don’t miss this chance to hear Martyn. Don’t forget the Charity Night at the Spa,
Saltburn, on December 1st, which is being organised by club regular Ian Tyzack in aid of the prostate cancer charity. There’ll be local club singers and a big raffl e. (Donations of prizes will be welcome.) Details from John Taylor on 01287 622623 or Ian on 01642 469754. I’m guessing doors will open at 7-30 p.m. There’s to be a Theme Night of ‘Songs of
Drink and Merriment’ on December 6th, and where better to sing them than at the ‘Duke William?’ There are plenty of merry songs in the folk repertoire, after all! December 13th will be ‘Singers and Musicians.’ but there’ll be more merriment at our Club Christmas Party on the 20th December. Leave the shopping, bring some food to share, and come prepared to enjoy yourselves. Looking ahead, Dec 27th will be ‘2012 Survivors’ Night’ and Jan 3rd brings the wonderful Marie Little as our guest. More next time! Looking back, Tony Baylis’ Hot Spot on Sept.
i, all. I’ve just an ‘ordinary’ Singers’ and Musicians’ night to mention
29th was a fi rst-class evening. A former regular now living away, he did a mix that covered the folk repertoire from trad to Jake Thackeray and Sid Kipper via Richard Thompson. And he did them all well. Norfolk’s gain (where he now lives) is our loss,
but it was great to hear him again. Trevor Lister is another old stager who was doing some very interesting and very funny songs of his own for his Hot Spot a week later when he was taken ill, but I’m very pleased to say he was back on his feet the next day and back at the club the next week. You
can’t keep a good man down! Stan Graham from York was new to me, but
anyone who’s toured with Vin Garbutt was worth waiting for and he was very good. He’s mostly a writer of contemporary songs, but his sympathies are timeless and world-wide. What’s more, the resulting songs are passionate and singable. Very impressive, and a very enjoyable evening We had a club charity night for prostate cancer
on Oct. 18th. (The Spa night is a bigger affair for all local clubs.) Plenty of local singers came along and most brought extra raffl e prizes - so THAT was fun in itself! The performers were on top form and the prize for Unlikely Applicability must go to Ray Storr for his song of the Colo- Rectal Surgeon! Another of those nights that shows what a great community the local folk scene is. But it’s a community that welcomes anyone
who likes folk music and fun. If you’ve not been, come and join us at the “Duke William”, Skelton-in-Cleveland, on Thursdays, 8pm for 8.15 for singarounds and 8.30 for guest nights. Thanks as ever to our organiser John and our kind hosts Geoff and Lal. See you soon! George F
