art security system that drew special inter- est from attendees and the security trade press. Center managers decided to bun- dle “like” technology systems, such as security, audio-visual, IT and other sys- tems into a single procurement. This cre- ated cost-efficiencies of 10 percent on capital costs, but also provided for a robust, integrated system.
The sophistication of the system gives meeting planners the assurance that if they are considering high-profile speakers, security will not be an issue, said Ahmeenah Young, the Pennsylvania Convention Center’s president and CEO. “While the stature of the conventions we are hosting is certainly a driving factor, our proximity to Washington, DC and our high- ly regarded security system certainly make logistics much easier.”
Since the summer, conventions at the cen- ter have been able to attract high-profile keynote speakers, including Vice President Joseph Biden, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and former Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
The center’s security system now includes an Andover Continuum card access sys- tem, a security command center, and a CCTV system that is integrated with the video and card access systems. High-def- inition cameras installed inside and outside the building provide excellent quality video. Equally important, the system provides security staff with easy access to compre- hensive information needed for real-time monitoring of safety and security.
