Preserving History in the First State
D
Delaware's Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs’ primary mission is to promote and protect the First State’s historic iden- tity. Their dedication to this mission has resulted in the historic preservation of two unique properties that will now serve as highly sought after meeting and event facilities.
One is Buena Vista Conference Center, a former 1847 private Grand Mansion that belonged to a Delaware U.S. Statesman, and other is The Arsenal, an armory built in anticipation of the War of 1812.
Both facilities are within just five miles of each other, yet each offers the opportunity to create a memorable event in two vastly different historic set- tings.
Buena Vista is surrounded by 300-plus acres of farmland, woodlands and landscaped grounds with space available for up to 250 guests. Outdoor tenting locations and modern communication capabilities add to the versa- tility of this venue.
The Arsenal offers a more intimate experience, with two rooms that can accommodate 80-100 people each, and it is nestled in the very heart of Historic New Castle, a National Historic Landmark. New Castle served as Delaware’s first colonial and state capital, and was the original landing place of William Penn in 1682.
Only minutes from I-95, I-495, I-295, and 40 minutes by car from Philadelphia International Airport (as well as only 20 minutes from the Wilmington Amtrak Train Station), these two venues are situated midway between New York City and Washington, DC, and are within a 3-hour driving radius to more than 1/3 of the nation’s population.
Close proximity to Historic New Castle offers many benefits when booking at either facility, such as the town’s offerings of world-renowned museums, diverse restaurants and access to picturesque Battery Park. These attributes assist planners in building attendance, as attendees and/or their families can enjoy these attractions outside of any scheduled business activities.
In addition, both newly renovated properties offer planners the enticing lure of immediate ROI to help their bottom line, because Delaware adds no sales tax on meeting room rental, food or beverage.
What’s more, choosing either location creates a great sense of satisfaction in knowing that all rental revenues go directly to the continued preservation efforts of both properties, so that they will continually be available for the enjoyment of future generations.
