OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND FROM THE CHAMBER FOR ENTERTAINING CLIENTS

Glasgow Chamber is taking advantage of an offer from the Open Golf Championship to sponsor the Chamber’s golf tournament in October at Archerfield golf course in East Lothian. Chamber Deputy Chief Executive Richard Muir

explained: “This year’s event involves six teams from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Midlothian and East Lothian Chambers of Commerce competing against each other for individual and team honours. And, of course, the famous Open Championship Claret Jug will be on show – although it won’t be going home with the winners of our event.” The sponsors are keen to spread the word among the business community about the perennial problem of rogue traders setting up at the 2013 Open Championship being held in July at Muirfield. Richard said: “At any major event there are always unscrupulous people who will try to cash in on the brand name despite not having any authority to do so. “The Open Championship

organisers are keen to urge our members to use only official hospitality sources and avoid the danger of being ripped off.” It’s not all pomp and

razzmatazz. Glasgow Chamber offers a wide range of opportunities to connect with clients – staging more than 100 events each year. Most of them are networking opportunities and involve either invited guests from the world of business, or Chamber members themselves, telling the stories of their success to their peers: • Glasgow Talks attracts senior business leaders, usually to hear a celebrity speaker (Steve Cram was there recently, and BBC Business Editor Robert Peston has also been a guest) but it also can be in a panel format on different themes, such as media, tourism and hospitality, and football

• Breakfast Business Briefings offer interesting and relevant subjects for discussion over the coffee and rolls

• Behind the Scenes takes a group of interested members to such places as Scottish Opera’s costume department

• Lunch and Learn provides an invited guest with an audience keen to learn what they have to say. Richard added: “We’re also keen that Chamber members get more involved in the cultural life of the city – such as the Merchant City Festival and the Great Scottish Run. There’s a considerable business-to-business crossover at such events,

and at some of the others that we organise, such as the St Patrick’s Day and St Andrew’s Day events that we hold in the city.” The Chamber also organises the city’s biggest

showpiece event – the Glasgow Business Awards, which attracts an audience of more than 600 members and their guests and celebrates success among businesses both large and small. “The event has grown in recent years and

we’re very proud that Bank of Scotland are the main sponsors and are very supportive of our efforts to make it bigger and better. It offers our members an opportunity to bring their guests and potential clients to a glittering gala dinner and award ceremony,” said Richard.
