Latest Council Leader’s meeting hails city’s sporting success
Council engagement Glasgow Chamber members proved they were great sports when they attended the latest quarterly meeting with the Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Gordon Matheson. A very large turnout of the city’s business leaders heard a passionate address from Councillor Matheson. This fed off Glasgow’s not insignificant part in the success of London 2012, which has set the clock ticking for 2014. However, as much as tributes are
rightly being paid to current success, Glasgow and its business community is very much united in looking to the future – to 2014 and beyond. On that note, Councillor Matheson
invited all businesses to encourage staff to back our official bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (via www.
glasgow2018.com). The Leader also provided further detail of the city’s overall sports strategy, which aims to see us host a major event every year for the next ten.
The second half of the meeting
comprised executive director for development and regeneration Richard Brown presenting his preparations to help produce a five- year city centre strategy for Glasgow’s ongoing development. Among the milestones on the
road to the launch of the strategy in June 2013 is a business consultation. Members can look forward to hearing more before then and will be invited to engage in the strategy development by outlining their key issues and priorities later this year. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce will host a city centre conference on 25 October. The meeting concluded with
a very healthy and open question and answer session during which there was a general consensus from members that they wish to support the council with its plans – both in official and volunteering capacities, the latter being one of the true highlights of London 2012 Olympics, which included events in Glasgow.
Following the 2014 Commonwealth Games, swimmers will get a chance to compete at the 2015 IPC European Swimming Championships, also in Glasgow
