FOUR SHIRES v LOOKING BACK


Strangely, we do know what is going on in this set of pictures. The people pictured are all involved in a ‘Beating the Bounds’ ceremony. This ancient ceremony was important in years gone by, as it marked the area belonging to a certain parish - making the parishioners who lived within the bounds liable for certain payments.


Members of the local community - young and old - would walk the parish boundary, placing markers at certain points around the edge. It seems that these pictures were taken in the 60s and one presumes it’s Banbury’s boundaries that are being marked.
