of spreading shrubs and herbaceous plants. This banished the need for bedding and fillers and now I barely need to touch the area.
It
also means that through the summer I am able to cut roses and bring them inside guilt free as, since they are now only visible to the veggies, I don’t worry that I am spoiling the display.
Sometimes, our gardens can cause more work and feel like an uphill struggle because we are fighting nature. Wrong plant, wrong place can easily be remedied but often it is the very things that make living in the countryside so special that cause the frustration. Just as a female hare frisks, leaps and boxes in order to push away the unwanted amorous advances of her male admirers, so too our garden can become victim of unwanted attentions – not just from slugs, snails and other creepy types that occur everywhere, but more particularly from rabbits and deer. This is particularly apparent as the fresh growth begins to appear at this time of year – one minute all is looking healthy and thriving, the next it is gone!
Nicholsons have experience of working in a wide range of gardens in different locations, some of which are practically within a deer park. There are certain plants that both rabbits and deer just do not seem to touch ever, and happily among them, most aspects and environments are covered. This means that
if nibbling is a problem and fencing your entire garden is not an option, there are likely to be suitable plants that you can substitute for which will survive unscathed and save you constantly replanting and replacing.
Some are obvious when you consider their aromatic
and textured leaves - Lavenders, Alliums, Rosemary, Nepeta and Osmanthus all spring to mind. Others survive happily in woodlands where deer are most prevalent – Anemone blanda, Bluebells, Digitalis and ferns. However, for some there seems to be no rhyme nor reason – Clematis, Crocosmia, Paeonia, Syringa, Asters and Alchemilla mollis to name a few. Whatever the reason, it is possible to put together a scheme that is beyond temptation and therefore reduce the to-do list, freeing you up to enjoy the wildlife in your garden rather than fight it.
