FOUR SHIRES v LOOKING BACK
These super pictures show two of the Four Shire’s favourite animals - dogs and elephants! The dog is undoubtedly a bassett hound - whether he could drive the van or not who knows? This picture was obviously staged, but the bassett doesn’t seem to be objecting too much. A famous cartoon strip that appeared in the Daily Mail newspaper - Fred Bassett - probably inspired the pose.

In the small picture, seen left to right are: Nelson Freeman, G.P. Stanley, Harry Hillman and William (Bill) Wrench. John was intrigued with the picture, as GP Stanley is John’s great great grandfather!
This majestic elephant looks to be trumpeting as loud as possible. We know that troops of elephants were paraded through the towns of the Four Shires during the 60s, but times have changed and the idea of elephants being taught to perform can now be upsetting to some...
