FOUR SHIRES v ARTS & ANTIQUES
BONHAMS TOASTS ECLECTIC FINE & RARE WINES SALE ON
A wonderfully eclectic range of wines was offered at Bonhams sale of Fine & Rare Wines in London.
A fine collection of Italian wines saw 3 bottles of Amarone Classico 1990 from Giuseppe Quintarelli sell for £943 (estimate £600-700) with 6 bottles of 1997 Amarone from Romano dal Forno making £1725 (estimate £1200-1400). A case of Barolo Cascina Francia 1990 from Giacomo Conterno achieved £2530 (estimate £2400-3000), with a dozen Sassicia 2002 hitting £1012 (estimate £600-700) and 6 bottles of Case Basse Brunello di Montalcino 1990 making £690.
Vintage Champagne was highly sought after with a magnum of 1952 Krug Collection selling for £1610 (estimate £600-700) and 11 bottles of 1966 making £1725 (estimate £1400-1600).
Port appears to have come back into fashion with buyers chasing mature vintages; a bottle of 1917 Sandeman sold for £667 with another bottle (estimate £300-360) and 11 bottles of 1963 Dow made £943 (estimate £520-620).
Cognac, both vintage and special bottlings, have been exceeding estimates for some months. A bottle of 1811 Bisquit-Debouche 1811 made £1495 (estimate £1000-1300) with a Reserve du Chateau de Chasseneuil 1893 going for £943 (estimate £400-500. Two bottles of a special limited edition of Richard Hennessy Sir Garfield Sobers Private Collection in a Baccarat decanter both went for £1265 (estimate £400-480) and five decanters of Courvoisier Erte selling for £1380.
Burgundy was well represented with a bottle of Henri Jayer’s 1976 Echezeaux making £1840 (estimate £1000-1200) and a bottle of Romanee-Conti 1992 going for £5290 (estimate £4400-5000). Two cases of 1973 and 1974 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti assortments made £10,580 and £10,925 respectively (estimate £9000-1200). Bordeaux remains the mainstay of most auction sales and a bottle of Chateau Latour 1945 went for £1610 (estimate £1200-1600) with a bottle of the 1961 vintage making £1955 (estimate £1500-1800) and a case of the 1982 reaching £13,800 (estimate £12000-15000). Despite the reported fall in prices of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, we still achieved £2990 for single bottles of the 1982 vintage (estimate £2000-2400). Mature vintages of Chateau d’Yquem attracted interest with a bottle of the 1945 vintage making £1012 (estimate £700-800) and the 1967 vintage £747 (estimate £500-600).
Richard Harvey, Senior International Director of the Wine Department said ‘we always like to produce sales that will interest the genuine wine lover with a breadth and variety of wines. This auction was no exception and we had a lot of interest from commission and internet bidders, as well as in the room.’
Bonhams next London sale will take place on 29th March.
EXHIBITIONS AT COMPTON VERNEY 31 March - 10 June 2012 GAINSBOROUGH’S LANDSCAPES: THEMES AND VARIATIONS
This exhibition is the first exhibition solely devoted to the landscapes of Thomas Gainsborough’s (1727 - 1788). It brings together a wonderful group of paintings and drawings from public and private collections spanning his whole career. If painting portraits was Gainsborough’s business then painting landscapes (as above) was his pleasure. These works reveal, the mind of the great artist at work and play.
INTO THE LIGHT: FRENCH AND BRITISH PAINTING FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO THE EARLY 1920S
This era marks a decisive period in the history of European art. This exhibition surveys the production of paintings on both sides of the Channel from the 1870s to the early 1920s, revealing connections, allowing a comparison of the artist’s work and seeing how their more spontaneous approach to painting produced stunning depictions of the shifting of light over the landscape.
