Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association Supports Referendums on OLG Gaming Expansion

The Ontario Horse Racing Industry Asso- ciation applauds MPP Monte McNaughton’s private member’s bill, introduced in the Legis- lature on Thursday April 26, 2012 that would require local referendums prior to allowing new gaming facilities to be constructed. “We believe this bill is an important step and one that will ensure, just as the OLG Slots at Racetracks Program has done in the past, that only communities that support OLG gam- ing facilities will host them,” said Sue Leslie, President of the Ontario Horse Racing and

Breeding Association.

Both the NDP and PC have spoken in favour of referendums prior to the approval of new gaming facilities, and OHRIA hopes that both parties will unite to push this bill through the legislature prior to the spring recess. “The Slots at Racetracks Program is a $1.1 billion dollar profit generator for the govern- ment of Ontario that was created as a result of wide spread opposition to hosting gaming facilities. The seventeen tracks proved to be willing hosts, in willing communities and the

government has reaped the benefit ever since,” said Leslie.

MPP McNaughton’s bill will be voted on at second reading on May 3rd 2012 and if passed at that stage referred to committee for further consideration. New Democrats or Lib- eral MPPs support will be required to pass the bill.

From Our Founder

Remembering May 1978

We were still priced at $1.00 per issue. The Post Office tried to put us out of business once again. Here we are 42 years later and we are the same family owned business.

The Alaska State Horseman’s Association sent us a write up on their gymkhana clubs. It was encouraging to hear from such a far away place. The Rider was certainly getting around.

We reported on the activities of Quarterama ‘78. Laura Lou McArthur, newly minted Quarterama Queen, was presented with a custom made West- ern saddle by the owner of Troy Cox Saddles.

Ontario Combined Driving Association

Garland William’s of Trophy Nut fame and president of Quarter Racing

Owners had fun dumping members into the Dunk Tank.

The Ontario Rodeo Association promoted the idea of new contestants wanting to try rodeo to take up the sport at rodeo schools. This would avoid practicing at the rodeo and loos- ing entry fees.

20 year old Mark Jones of Aberdeen St., Mount Hope was injured when the horse he was riding in Lynden, Ontario was spooked by a train. The horse plunged into the side of the train and was killed instantly. Jones was taken to Brant General Hos- pital.

The Oxford Trail Riders Associa- tion held a Spring Coggins Clinic for it’s members. Proof of a negative Cog- gins test was the only way into horse shows. The event not only included the Coggin test, they received a tetanus shot and a rabies vaccination. The cost was a staggering $5.00 per horse.

Dr. R.A. Wentzell of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia won The Riders sub-

scriber contest draw of a Lemetex English Round Bridle.

The Wild Horses of America had their registry Incorporated. The orga- nization was established in the State of Nevada to give recognition to the horses of the Spanish Conquistador’s that had escaped four centuries before.

Restrictions were placed on the movement of horses from Kentucky for breeding purposes under a quaran- tine order issued by USDA. The quar- antine was for CEM - Contagious Equine Metritis, a new foreign disease of horses discovered at 14 breeding farms in Kentucky. The disease spread from England, Ireland, France and Australia.

Back to the present... IN MY OPINION...

It seems that smily face Andrea Horwath of the Ontario National Dis- aster Party has come to the rescue of our socialist left wing Liberal Party. This move by Horwath killed the pos- sibility of defeating the Liberals and replacing them in a new election. Sub-

sequently it also killed the hope of halting their misguided attempt to reform the OLG by destroying the Ontario Horse Racing Industry. This is bound to come back and haunt them during the next election. That’s 30 for now.
