Bringing Equine Education to the Can-Am
Guelph, Ontario - March 30, 2012 - It was a great turnout once again at the Can-Am All Breeds Equine Emporium held March 16- 18 in London, Ontario. Staff from the Centre for Open Learning and Educa- tional Support from the University of Guelph were on hand to welcome show patrons and field questions regarding the award-win- ning online courses, as well as chat with past students who shared stories of their related learning successes. “We are always excit- ed to attend the Can Am where we are able to talk horses with our former, current and potential stu- dents, said Marjory Gaou- ette, Manager of Program Development for the Cen- tre for Open Learning and Educational Support. “Being out in the commu- nity really underlines how these courses are making a difference for our stu- dents.”
Many patrons expressed interest in the
University of Guelph’s two new Equine Certificate pro- grams currently being offered – the Equine Wel- fare Certificate and the Equine Veterinary Techni- cian Certificate. Both cer- tificates now offer 12-week online courses starting on May 7, 2012; these include Management of the Equine Environment, Equine Behaviour, and Advanced Equine Functional Anato- my.
“There was a keen interest in our new Equine Veterinary Technology Certificate, which enables Veterinary Technicians to develop a specialty in equine studies,” noted Gaouette. “Through the combination of online and face-to-face practicum courses, students would be able to build upon their knowledge and skills with an area of expertise in hors- es.”
During the three-day event, patrons were invited to submit their names into a draw for complimentary
enrollment of an online course of their choice. The Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support Open Learning would like to congratulate Tina Erb of South Western Ontario and wish her best of luck on her new venture.

When it comes to improving the health and welfare of the horse, Equine Guelph takes a big- picture approach regarding equine education by help- ing to encompass the needs of the beginner through to the industry veteran. No matter what the level of involvement in the equine industry, Equine Guelph’s courses help provide stu- dents with the knowledge and assistance to help make good decisions for their horses.
As a past participant of Equine Guelph’s Equine Anatomy program at the University of Guelph, Con- stable Mark Decosta knows the importance of updating one’s skills when it comes to the health and care of horses. Constable Decosta is an officer for the Toronto Mounted Police unit that is housed on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Ontario.
While some riders of the mounted unit have an agricultural background or
grew up around horses, many do not. Horse experi- ence can be an asset; how- ever, newcomers take part in an intensive training pro- gram directly through the mounted unit.
“I had no riding expe- rience or horse care experi- ence prior to this position,” says Constable Decosta. “Any knowledge I have was acquired through in- house training. I initially had the 15-week riding course, where I was taught the basics for riding and caring for the horse. Every- thing else was picked up on the job from more experi- enced mounted officers.” Education has been identified by the equine industry as a high priority, and in response to this need, course offerings are available to suit the stu- dents’ needs at all levels, whether they are a sea- soned veteran or new to equine ownership.
“I feel it is always beneficial to expand on your level of knowledge and experience different avenues of learning,” he
says. “You can only learn so much within your own, confined environment.” Equine Guelph is con- tinually expanding its course offerings, and as part of its award winning online studies program, has more to offer than any other online equine studies certificate or diploma pro- gram. With 19 courses taught by highly qualified, respected professionals from the University of Guelph’s renowned Ontario Vet College and industry professionals, stu- dents are provided with the opportunity to explore the latest equine research and learn to apply it to the health and welfare of hors- es in a practical way.
Online courses begin every September, January, and May. For more infor- mation or to view full course listings, please visit www.equinestudiesdiplo-
