MAY 2012 THE RIDER /3 OEF Equestrian Skills Development Competitions

The Ontario Equestrian Federation’s (OEF) Equestrian Skills Development compe- titions (E.S.D.) are horse shows that are approved and sanctioned by the OEF at the schooling level. In previous years, these com- petitions were referred to as “Discovery” shows.

E.S.D competitions are the perfect place for horse and rider to gain show ring experi- ence! In a more relaxed environment, competi- tors will obtain valuable skills and build their confidence in the show ring, in turn, providing them with an overall positive experience before moving on to future competition endeavours.

E.S.D. competitions are permitted to use Equine Canada “r” status judges and OEF accredited officials so competitors can be sure they will receive the same quality of judging as when they compete at bronze or silver level competitions. Riders and horse owners are only required to have a valid OEF membership in order to compete at E.S.D. competitions. Thus ensuring all horses and riders are insured as a safety precaution.

Why Compete at an E.S.D. Competition? • Novice riders and green horses will gain pos- itive show experience in a controlled, struc- tured environment

• Competitors will be judged by Equine Cana- da or OEF accredited officials

• The OEF ensures that the venue hosting the competition has proper insurance needed to host a horse show

• Competition organizers must follow a set of guidelines to ensure the safety of horse and rider at all times
