President’s Message

This month marks the kickoff for our 2012 show season, and it is a full schedule of great locations, so should be another good year.

March was CanAm month and there was good interest in the ORHA booth, with $220 raised in our toolbox raffle, and a dozen or so of new anniversary hats sold. A big thank you to those who helped at the ORHA booth – in particular, Dan and Berenice Fletcher, Sharon Jones, Bev Sheremeto, Lynne and Larry McDougall and of course, Mike Munroe for once again taking the lead in pulling it all together. We have added another new tool to our

website – the “You Be the Judge” videos. This is a set of videos, where you view a run and score it, and then see it reviewed and scored by an NRHA judge.

This is a great opportunity to see a run through the judge’s eyes and to improve your own runs, and kudos to ORHA Direc- tor, Art Roberts, for pulling this together. And for those of you “tweeters” out there, ORHA is also now on Twitter, thanks to K.D. Grainger – follow us @theORHA. I hope you all had a good winter and I look forward to seeing everyone at Fletcher’s Horse World this month. Until then, safe sliding.

The ORHA requires all riders under the age of 18 to wear an approved safety helmet while mounted on a horse at any ORHA approved shows. Any rider aged 14 to 18 is exempt from this requirement while showing in a class provided a signed waiver from a parent is on file at the show office. The waiver is on the ORHA home page under the piece outlining the new rules. The ORHA is offering a $15

rebate upon the proof of purchase of a hel- met. In addition, Picov’s is offering ORHA members a discount on helmets, and will bring some to the first show at Fletcher’s for purchase at cost. To order one in your size, please call Julie at Picov’s.

In addition, the OEF offers a dis- count to its members on helmet purchases (check out their website for details).

Show Updates

Regrettably the Quarterama show has been cancelled for this year, so please adjust your calendars.

On a positive note, Pickering Horse Centre has added two shows to our sched- ule, and it will be great to be back there ORHA membership cards will NOT be mailed out this year, but will be available for pickup at the show office.

Watch for the NRHA Green Reiner I class at some of the shows this year. This is a class for riders with less than $100 in

NRHA earnings and less than 25 NRHA Youth points, and will not affect eligibility for ORHA Beginner or Green As Grass classes.

You can show one or two handed, can do simple or flying lead changes, and you do not need an ORHA membership or NRHA Competition licence (you will need a $20 NRHA Associate Membership), and you do not need to own the horse. You will be awarded points that can earn you a jacket or Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle.
