Equine Canada Releases Special Report: The Economics of Horse Racing in Canada


Ottawa, Ontario — The Ontario horse racing industry is contributing $4.5 billion or 77 per cent of the total annu- al economic contributions from racing in Canada, according to a new study released today by Equine Canada and Strategic Equine. The Economics of Horse Racing in Canada, an in_depth report on the horse racing industry on a province_by_province basis, identifies the significant eco- nomic contributions realized through horse racing in Canada – the industry gener- ates more than 47,000 full- time equivalent jobs and $5.7 billion annually to the national economy.


The racing sector repre- sents a small percentage of the total number of horses in Canada, but a significantly higher percentage of the overall economic contribu- tion that comes from horses in Canada. With 45,000 horses active in the racing sector (five per cent of the total Canadian herd), the horse racing sector provides 26 per cent of the total eco- nomic contribution, and a $5.7 billion annual economic impact. Racing in Ontario represents the largest provin- cial sector for the national racing industry, with more than 68 per cent of the total racing opportunities and 86 per cent of the total purses earned in 2010.


The Economics of Horse Racing In Canada is the first in a series of ‘state of the industry’ reports to be developed by Equine Canada from the 2010 Canadian Horse Industry Profile Study, released in 2011. The 2010 study provided the country with the broadest


and the deepest analysis of the national equine industry since Equine Canada first began producing the reports in 1998. | “The demographic and economic information gar- nered in the 2010 survey provided a wealth of infor- mation that is pivotal to demonstrating the contribu- tion of the Canadian horse industry to the country’s overall economic health,” states Mike Gallagher, Presi- dent of Equine Canada. “Our goal with the national study and related State Of The Industry reports such as this, is to better inform deci- sion_making and policy development as it affects our industry and our horses.” “With a short, intense competition career for active race horses, the annual expenditure on products and services for race horses is significantly higher than for most other horses. Horse rac- ing drives demand for spe- cialist equine veterinarians, and equine health products and services that add to the health infrastructure for the horse industry as a whole,” states Vel Evans, author of the study.


“Through all our fifteen


years of research for provin- cial, national and interna- tional horse industries, it has been apparent that where there’s a healthy horse rac- ing industry, there’s a strong horse industry.”

Horse Racing Industry Information Reception with MPPs at Queen’s Park


OHRIA Notice to the Industry - May 1, 2012


The evening of Monday, April 30th, OHRIA and Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) co-sponsored an Industry Information Reception at Queen’s Park in Toronto.


Attended by 58 of Ontario’s MPPs, plus some staff, the reception provided OHRIA and WEG the opportunity to per- sonally interact with the members. The evening’s focus was to educate and inform the MPPs about the business model of the horse racing and breeding industry. “This open house was an opportunity to have meaningful discussions with sever- al of the MPPs in an environment designed to tell them about the critical contribution horse racing and breeding made to the Provincial economy,” said OHRIA Presi- dent, Sue Leslie, who participated in the event along with other OHRIA Directors and Executives from Woodbine Entertain- ment Group. “The feedback from the members was very positive and they appreciated receiving accurate data on our industry and how it operates.”

posters were used to illustrate how the industry functions and to initiate open dia- logue. Members were provided with a full briefing package to take away which also included a DVD to provide visual informa- tion on the industry. The high number of MPPs in attendance demonstrates OHRIA’s messaging has been effective. “Thank you to all those who participat- ed in the event, as well as a special thanks to Woodbine Entertainment Group for coordinating and facilitating the event” said Leslie.
