8 This simple, scenic route is ideal for families
with children. It travels through the Dams to
Darnley Country Park along waymarked tracks granting excellent cycling beside the beautiful dams of Balgray, Ryat Linn and Waulkmill. There are extensive views over East Renfrewshire and Glasgow and the wildlife includes great-crested grebe and geese. Once by Waulkmill Reservoir a lovely, wooded single-track road provides a final run to reach the famous Darnley Tree at Darnley, where Mary, Queen of Scots allegedly nursed her cousin (and future husband), Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, back to health. The busy Aurs Road has to be crossed and care should be taken when doing so. Return by the same route. For an easier cycle stop before descending the hill to in Waulkmill glen.
1. Exit the car park on Balgraystone Road by turning left onto a path signposted for Waulkmill Glen. Follow the traffic-free path anti-clockwise around Balgray Reservoir along a firm track and over 3 bridges, for just over 1 mile, enjoying the superb scenery.
