This hard, but exhilarating, route begins at
Giffnock, climbs through Newton Mearns and onto the old A77 where an excellent cycle lane keeps traffic separate. A long section of open moorland road grants wonderful views out to the renowned profile of Arran to the west whilst south the rolling hills of Galloway form a distinctive barrier on the horizon. A tough pull then crosses Eaglesham Moor (in the company of skylark and swift), where the wide-open space provides an exceptional panorama over Glasgow to the likes of Ben More and Stob Binnein. Quieter roads then journey from Eaglesham back to Newton Mearns where a long descent down Ayr Road, exploiting an excellent cycle lane, returns to Giffnock.
1. From Giffnock Railway Station, turn left onto Fenwick Road (A77) and cycle through busy Giffnock to reach Eastwood Toll. Go straight through onto Ayr Road (A77) where a cycle lane climbs steadily for just over 2 miles to reach Newton Mearns at Mearns Cross.
2. 2.75 miles/4.5km Go through two sets of traffic lights and a roundabout then continue
