DISTANCE: 22 MILES/35.5KM

TIME: 4 HOURS

GRADE: HARD

to follow the A77, away from Newton Mearns, swinging right by the Malletsheugh Inn, where the cycle lane continues along the pavement and over the M77. The cycle lane then crosses the A77, and turns left to travel through lovely open countryside with some fantastic views across Ayrshire and Galloway opening out. Follow the cycle lane for another 6.5 miles to reach the B764.

3. 9.25 miles/14.75km Carefully cross the busy A77 and follow the B764 (Eaglesham Moor Road) with Whitelee Windfarm ahead. The road then narrows to a single-track road but here a cycle lane is picked up, as is a steep ascent, travelling over the wide-open expanse of Eaglesham Moor, and climbing by the entrance to Whitelee, to reach the highest point of the moor underneath Ballageich. The panorama is magnificent, extending across Glasgow to the Campsie Fells, Dumgoyne, and the big mountains of the Southern Highlands. From this point the road drops steeply, presenting a superb run to reach a mini-roundabout at Eaglesham. Bear left into Polnoon Street and follow this down to reach Gilmour Street (B767).

4. 12.25 miles/19.75km Turn left, cycle through Eaglesham to reach Humbie Road. Turn left and follow the road out of Eaglesham with another steep climb providing further exceptional views. Carry on to reach a roundabout, turn right, descending underneath the A726, turn left at the next roundabout, then straight through the next one and follow the quiet, undulating Humbie Road for a further 1.5 miles to reach a roundabout at Mearns Road.

5. 15.5 miles/25km Turn right, cycle down Mearns Road and then turn left into Eaglesham Road. Follow this back to Ayr Road (A77). Turn right where the cycle lane provides a wonderful descent back to Giffnock.
