length but Whitelee Windfarm has 56 miles/90km of trails accessible to (mountain) bikes meaning this route can be extended to suit most cycling abilities. The route detailed is ideal for families with younger children as the cycling takes place along firm paths and tracks with only two small inclines the second being the return up the hill to the visitor centre. The tour takes in a wonderfully wild, open landscape where the likes of grouse, skylark with its poetic song, snipe and birds of prey are commonly seen. The views, across East Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Arran, Galloway, Glasgow and the Southern Highlands are remarkable. There are bench seats along this route for picturesque rests and the entire route is signposted at key junctions with green fingerposts.
1. From Whitelee Visitor Centre car park go to the entrance of the windfarm near to the turbine blade display and pass through the open gate and cycle down the hill to Turbine 40. Follow the track round to the left and follow the signpost for Lochgoin climbing gently to another signpost. Turn right where the track broadens, onto a solid single track path and follow this, with spectacular views of Arran, Galloway and across Eaglesham Moor. At the end of the single track turn left at the boulder onto the broad track at turbine 41 and then turn right at the bench to head downhill. Reach Turbine 54 and you’ve gone too far.
